I had already done an introduction to Pilates class in a studio setting and during lockdown I was forced to try Pilates by Zoom. Any anxieties I had about clarity seeing my instructor and hearing instruction were soon dispelled due to the concerted efforts that Alexis takes. I find using my iPad gives me a clear line of vision which is easily adjusted whether standing or at floor level. She always has been conscious of what she wears so I can see her outlined movements clearly and regularly adjusts her position depending on the exercise. I am always amazed from the moment the class starts how she continually has an easy flow of speech, imparting concise instructions whilst offering different levels of difficulty for each exercise. Not being the most flexible of individuals and having connective tissue issues means that pain can be a barrier to exercise. However, in Alexis’s class I’m constantly reminded and offered alternative levels of doing an exercise while being aided by simple Pilates equipment to never be in pain. Alexis offers a constantly changing class routine focusing on a different piece of equipment on a weekly basis, a wall, ball, exercise ring, band etc. Overall, doing Pilates with Alexis has increased my core strength and my stamina has improved which has a profound effect on my long-term health and wellbeing.

Alexis has an incredible way of teaching, explaining everything clearly and precisely, which really gets you using the correct muscles. She breaks down each move step-by-step, so you can just listen with your eyes closed and know exactly what to do, although she does demonstrate everything in case you’re in any doubt.

She gives options of difficulty, so you can choose the most appropriate for you, and she’ll give individual advice at the end if you’re finding anything particularly challenging.

The classes vary from week to week, sometimes with household props to add more interest and challenge, but you always feel that the techniques are totally safe, so there is no fear of injury.

Alexis is super friendly and encouraging. She is such a positive force, and makes you feel like you’re achieving great things, even if you don’t think so. I would absolutely recommend her classes!

Whilst working at Kendal’s in my early twenties I put my back out and over the years it slowly got worse. I put up with it using mainly pain killers but through having children and work and my love of gardening it became impossible to function. I tried physios and chiropractors and even considered surgery as my back going into spasms became more frequent. When I gave up work in my early 50s it was suggested I try Pilates (I had had a go at yoga but I didn’t like it). I began doing it once a week (in a group situation) and got into quite an advanced group but my back went horribly into spasm and after weeks of recovery I lost my confidence. At that point I decided to go back to basics and begin again, change instructor and joined Alexis’ class. Of 4 or 5 instructors I have had, she was able to talk you through each and every stage so you didn’t end up making it up and causing discomfort. There is always an alternative if something doesn’t feel right. I also did some classes on the reformer with her which is brilliant. I won’t jinx it by saying my back is fully better but I am able to do gardening once again which at one point 5 minutes put me in severe agony. I hope to be still doing Pilates in my eighties like Alexis’ mum who is remarkable.

I really enjoy Alexis’ classes, and I know my back does! I have a prolapsed disc on both the left and right side of my lower back and often sit for more than 9 hours a day, due to work. I have been attending Alexis’ online classes for about 8 months, and they have helped me almost eliminate sciatica and minimise my lower back pain (both of which are exacerbated by long hours of sitting). I find Alexis explains the exercise very clearly, and repeats the instructions many times during the class, so it is always very clear how you should do a move. I also like the varying level of difficulty in the class, alongside the clear encouragement to choose which level suits best. I really enjoy using the various props too, I feel they help me focus on other aspects of my body (e.g. inner thighs, pelvic floor etc). I think it’s a delightful idea to have Alexis giving instruction over zoom, as viewers can listen to her calm, useful instructions and watch at the same time too.
