FAQs
Pilates on Zoom
A system of exercises designed to improve physical strength, flexibility, and posture, and enhance mental awareness.
All classes are on Zoom the free meeting app and website so you need to be a Zoom subscriber to attend – Zoom Signup Prior to starting classes with me you will need to complete my Enrolment Form, which will be sent to you when you book your first class. This is so that I can assess your experience of Pilates, fitness level, check your medical history and determine your aims and objectives. Please then sign up on my online booking system.
All levels are welcome including complete beginners. I always recommend you start with the basic Beginners’ level even if you feel strong fit and healthy. It is important to master the basics of the technique before progressing to higher level workouts. Class Levels.
You can wear anything that you feel comfortable working out in, either with socks if they have grip panels on the sole to stop you slipping, or barefoot. Most people wear leggings or long shorts and a comfortable top.
As a Beginner you will need minimal equipment all of which can be adapted from the home environment. As you progress to more advanced classes, you may want to purchase some of the suggested Pilates equipment but all classes can be done without it. You need enough space to move unobstructed and access to a bit of wall space.
All of my online Classes are run using Zoom. This is a free video meeting app that offers simple and reliable group video calls. Please join via the internet or download and install the Zoom app in advance as this allows you to test the audio and video before you start the class, this will save a lot of time. You can join a class on any device. Ideally you should be able to see me while exercising so rather than a phone, a tablet or laptop is the best option.
Yes – see Zoom Signup for details on setting up and using Zoom.
Zoom Guide:

Either sign up on the internet on Zoom or download and install the Zoom App, by clicking the appropriate button below depending on the type of phone you have.
You can find instructions on how to then test your video and audio set up in the links below:
Zoom Video Setup | Zoom Audio Setup
When installing Zoom please make sure you use a profile name that I will recognise. For your security I will not let anyone into the class unless I can identify you.
Joining the Class
You will receive an email with an invite to the class you’ve booked. This invite will contain two things you need to look for. A Meeting Link and a Meeting ID/Password, you can use either of these to join the class. the Meeting link is probably more straightforward as this enters the meeting ID and password for you and you simply click on the link to enter.
A Meeting Link
This will start the class for you. It will look something like this.
Alexis Ranson is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.
Join Zoom Meeting https://us02web.zoom.us/j/507863022?pwd=MlNjdFRNdjVJNWLzektv
Click on the link to join the meeting. Do this before the class starts so there is time to get ready and check your video and audio.
A meeting ID and Password
You will also see a meeting ID and password. They will look like this:
Meeting ID: 507 864 022. Password: 020766
Using this it is also possible to join the Class directly. To do this you will need to select “Join” from the app home screen or sign into zoom on the internet and “Join a meeting”. You will be prompted to enter the meeting ID and the password to enter rather than clicking on the link above.
While you are waiting for the class to start you may see a Test Computer Audio button. If you click on this you can check your video and audio is working OK.
Entering the Class
Join the class up to 10 minutes before the start so you have time to set up and get in position. Remember to “Join with video” and “Join with computer audio” when the options come up. If the class hasn’t started you will see the following message.
Please wait for the host to start this meeting
Just wait until I start the class, at this point, you will enter a waiting room and you will see the message below.
Please wait, the meeting host will let you in soon.
I will admit you into the class one at a time so I can check everyone is a legitimate participant in the class.
In the Class
Once in the class and you are set up and ready to go, switch to Speaker Mode/Active Speaker Mode which will show you full-screen video of me once the class starts. I will mute you once the class starts, this is because anyone speaking will otherwise take over the main video screen so you won’t be able to see me.
All online classes and sessions are offered under my existing Terms and conditions
Yes. The class levels vary so you should choose to work at a level you feel comfortable with Class Levels. The classes are all mat based so you just need to be able to get up and down off the floor.
Yes absolutely. There are so many health benefits to doing Pilates. The sessions are not just specific to people with back and neck problems.
Please check with your medical practitioner first before enrolling to check that you are sufficiently fit and healthy to start Pilates classes without aggravating your health. Clients must keep me informed of any changes in their health, including medical conditions, injuries and if they become pregnant. You may like to try a private class with me first before joining my group classes depending on the injury or medical condition. If you are pregnant or post-natal please wait to receive medical clearance before exercising. If you have had surgery, I strongly recommend you speak to your surgeon before starting any exercise workouts post op.
You should never get an increase in pain whilst doing the class. If you do, I suggest you stop that particular exercise and then rejoin when we move onto another movement. It may be that you are always in pain and so exercising with your normal pain is ok as long as it doesn’t increase. You may feel a discomfort from working muscles that haven’t been used in a while and that is fine!
It very much depends on the problem. Most people will feel some benefit instantly and find doing regular sessions a great way to manage their pain. In terms of muscle changes this will take time and it is recommended that you do the classes regularly to promote such changes.
